Education and US Training
Dr. Fouad El Sayyad graduated from Cairo University before continuing his ophthalmology training in the United States.
He completed a three-year clinical research fellowship at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, where his work focused on cornea, glaucoma and advanced ophthalmic imaging.
He then completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Florida — a high-volume surgical training program where cataract surgery formed a central part of his training, spanning routine cases through to dense and complex eyes. During his residency he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society in 2017, in recognition of academic excellence, professionalism and achievement in medicine.
He subsequently completed a fellowship in Cornea, External Eye Disease, and Refractive Surgery at Washington University in St. Louis.
In 2018, he became certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
In 2019 he additionally completed a four-month clinical research fellowship in cornea and advanced refractive surgery at Vissum Instituto Oftalmológico de Alicante in Spain — founded by Prof. Jorge Alió and one of Europe’s leading centres for refractive and corneal surgery — adding a European research perspective to his American surgical training.
This extensive clinical, surgical and academic training has shaped his precise, evidence-based approach to refractive surgery, cataract surgery and corneal disease.
Refractive Surgery and Vision Correction
Dr. Fouad El Sayyad specializes in the evaluation and treatment of myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and age-related difficulty with near vision.
His refractive surgery expertise includes:
- SMILE Pro using the ZEISS VisuMax 800
- Femto-LASIK
- PRK
- PRESBYOND laser blended vision
- Implantable Collamer Lens surgery
- Toric ICL surgery for patients with astigmatism
- Vision correction for high refractive errors
- Evaluation of patients with thin or irregular corneas
- Management of patients who have undergone previous refractive surgery
Every patient undergoes a detailed eye examination before surgery. This includes assessment of the prescription, corneal shape and thickness, ocular surface, pupil size, visual needs and lifestyle.
The aim is not simply to perform laser eye surgery, but to determine which procedure is most suitable for each individual eye.
Choosing Between SMILE Pro, Femto-LASIK and PRK
There is no single refractive surgery procedure that is best for every patient.
SMILE Pro may be an excellent option for suitable patients seeking flapless laser vision correction with a small incision. At Pro Vision Eye Center, SMILE Pro is performed using the ZEISS VisuMax 800, the latest generation of ZEISS femtosecond laser technology.
Femto-LASIK may offer advantages for other prescriptions or clinical situations, while PRK remains a reliable and effective option for selected patients, particularly when corneal measurements or lifestyle factors make a flapless surface procedure more appropriate.
Patients with very high prescriptions or unsuitable corneal measurements may be better candidates for an implantable lens such as an ICL.
For patients over the age of 40 who are beginning to experience difficulty with near vision, PRESBYOND laser blended vision may help reduce dependence on reading glasses when the eyes are suitable.
Dr. El Sayyad explains the advantages, limitations, expected recovery and realistic outcomes of every option before recommending treatment.
Advanced Refractive Technology at Pro Vision
At Pro Vision Eye Center in New Cairo, Dr. El Sayyad performs advanced laser vision-correction procedures using a fully integrated ZEISS refractive platform.
The ZEISS VisuMax 800 is used for SMILE Pro and for creating the corneal flap during Femto-LASIK. Its modern design allows rapid laser treatment and precise surgical planning.
Advanced corneal imaging and diagnostic investigations are used to assess:
- Corneal shape and thickness
- Epithelial thickness
- Corneal regularity
- Ocular surface health
- Anterior-segment anatomy
- Suitability for laser vision correction
- Risk factors for corneal weakness or ectasia
Technology is essential in modern refractive surgery, but accurate diagnosis, careful patient selection and experienced surgical judgment remain equally important.
ICL and Implantable Lens Surgery
Some patients are not ideal candidates for laser vision correction because of high myopia, high astigmatism, thin corneas or other anatomical factors. In these cases, an Implantable Collamer Lens may offer an effective alternative.
Dr. El Sayyad performs ICL and toric ICL surgery for suitable patients. Toric ICLs are designed to correct both refractive error and astigmatism.
Detailed measurements are required before surgery to assess the internal dimensions of the eye and select the appropriate lens size and power.
Cataract and Premium Lens Surgery
In addition to refractive surgery, Dr. El Sayyad performs modern cataract surgery and premium intraocular lens implantation.
His cataract surgery expertise includes:
- Standard cataract surgery
- Toric intraocular lenses for astigmatism
- Multifocal and trifocal intraocular lenses
- Extended-depth-of-focus lenses
- Enhanced monofocal lenses
- Cataract surgery after previous LASIK or PRK
- Management of complex cataract and anterior-segment cases
Lens selection is individualized according to the condition of the eye, the patient’s age, visual priorities, occupation, lifestyle and desired level of spectacle independence.
The goal is not only to remove the cataract, but also to create a visual plan suited to the patient’s daily needs.
Keratoconus and Corneal Disease
As a cornea specialist, Dr. El Sayyad also evaluates and treats keratoconus, corneal ectasia, corneal scarring, infections and complex ocular surface conditions.
His expertise includes:
- Corneal cross-linking
- Intracorneal ring segments
- Topography-guided treatment in selected cases
- Advanced corneal imaging and long-term monitoring
- Management of corneal infections and inflammation
- Dry eye and ocular surface treatment
- Recurrent corneal erosion management
- Specialty and scleral contact lens planning
Treatment is selected according to the patient’s age, corneal stability, visual quality, disease progression and individual clinical findings.
Research, Publications and Medical Education
Dr. Fouad El Sayyad has contributed to more than 30 international scientific publications in the fields of cornea, glaucoma, ophthalmic imaging and anterior-segment disease.
His academic interests include:
- Refractive surgery
- Keratoconus and corneal ectasia
- Advanced corneal imaging
- Infectious keratitis
- Ocular surface disease
- Premium cataract surgery
- Intraocular lens selection
He remains actively involved in ophthalmic education and regularly participates in scientific meetings, courses and conferences in Egypt and internationally.
A Personalized and Evidence-Based Approach
Dr. El Sayyad believes that successful refractive surgery begins with accurate diagnosis, appropriate patient selection and honest counseling.
Not every patient requires surgery, and not every eye is suitable for the same procedure.
During the consultation, patients receive a clear explanation of their examination findings, available treatment options, possible risks, expected recovery and realistic visual outcomes.
The recommended procedure is based on the patient’s eye measurements, medical findings and visual priorities rather than on using the same technique for every patient.
From the initial evaluation through surgery and postoperative follow-up, the emphasis remains on safety, precision, communication and long-term visual quality.
