SMILE PRO

What is SMILE Pro?

SMILE Pro (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction Pro) is the newest and most advanced generation of laser vision correction surgery. It corrects refractive errors, primarily myopia (short-sightedness) and astigmatism, by precisely reshaping the cornea using a femtosecond laser.

Unlike older procedures such as LASIK, SMILE Pro does not require the creation of a corneal flap. Instead, the laser creates and removes a tiny disc of corneal tissue (called a lenticule) through a small, self-healing incision: changing the shape of the cornea and improving the eye's focus.

The result is clear, sharp vision, often achieved within 24 hours of the procedure.

Why SMILE Pro?

SMILE Pro is the latest upgrade to the original SMILE procedure, made possible by the Zeiss VisuMax 800: the most advanced femtosecond laser system in the world. Compared to the original SMILE:

  • The laser treatment step takes just 8 seconds (down from 25+ seconds in earlier versions)
  • Higher energy efficiency means less heat and stress on corneal tissue
  • Improved outcomes consistency across a wider range of prescriptions
  • Faster intraoperative time = greater patient comfort

Pro Vision is among the first centers in Egypt to offer SMILE Pro, powered exclusively by the Zeiss VisuMax 800.

How Does SMILE Pro Work?

SMILE Pro is a minimally invasive, flapless laser procedure completed in a single laser step. Here is what happens, from start to finish:

Step 1

Preparation (10 minutes)

Anesthetic eye drops are applied, no injections, no general anesthesia. Your eye is gently positioned beneath the Zeiss VisuMax 800. You will be asked to focus on a soft green light.

Step 2

The Laser (8 seconds)

The femtosecond laser creates a lenticule, a precisely shaped disc of corneal tissue, entirely within the cornea. At Pro Vision Eye Center, this step takes approximately 8 seconds per eye. You will feel gentle pressure but no pain.

Step 3

Lenticule Extraction

The surgeon makes a small, arc-shaped incision (approximately 2–4mm) in the corneal surface. The lenticule is gently separated and removed through this incision. No flap is cut. No tissue is removed from the surface.

Step 4

Natural Healing Begins

Because the incision is self-sealing, no stitches are required. The eye begins healing immediately. Most patients notice a significant improvement in vision within a few hours and achieve clear vision by the following morning.

Total procedure time (both eyes): approximately 15–20 minutes. Laser time: 8 seconds per eye.

SMILE Pro vs Femto LASIK vs PRK

Not every laser procedure is right for every patient. Here is a straightforward comparison to help you understand the differences, and why the right choice depends entirely on your individual eye profile.

Important: There is no universally "best" procedure. At Pro Vision Eye Center, your diagnostic workup, not marketing, determines which procedure is right for your eye.

Some patients are ideal SMILE Pro candidates. Others achieve better outcomes with Femto LASIK or PRK. We will tell you which one is yours.

Who is a Good Candidate for SMILE Pro?

SMILE Pro is suitable for a wide range of patients. During your consultation at Pro Vision Eye Center, our surgical team will conduct a full diagnostic workup to confirm your eligibility. Generally, good candidates meet the following criteria:

Who is a Good Candidate for SMILE Pro?

Vision Requirements

  • Myopia (short-sightedness): up to -10.00 diopters
  • Astigmatism: up to -5.00 diopters
  • Stable prescription for at least 12 months (not changing year on year)

Physical Requirements

  • Age 21 or older
  • Corneas of adequate thickness (assessed during diagnostic)
  • Healthy corneas with no signs of keratoconus or other corneal disease
  • Pupils within normal size range
  • No significant dry eye disease (mild dry eye can often be managed)

Lifestyle Factors That Make SMILE Pro Especially Suitable

  • Active lifestyle: sports, martial arts, swimming
  • Jobs or activities with risk of eye contact (military, law enforcement, athletes)
  • Patients concerned about dry eye after surgery
  • Patients who want the shortest possible laser step

Not sure if you qualify? Our free diagnostic session uses the CSO Sirius+ corneal topographer and complete biometric workup to give you a definitive answer, not a guess.

Who is NOT a Candidate for SMILE Pro?

One of the things that distinguishes Pro Vision from lower-quality providers is that we will tell you honestly if SMILE Pro is not the right procedure for you, and offer a better alternative.

You may not be a candidate for SMILE Pro if you:

  • Have corneas that are too thin for safe lenticule extraction
  • Have active keratoconus or corneal ectasia
  • Have a hyperopic (long-sighted) prescription: SMILE Pro currently corrects myopia and astigmatism only; LASIK may be more appropriate
  • Are under 21 years of age, or have an unstable prescription
  • Have severe dry eye disease that has not been treated
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding at the time of consultation
  • Have certain systemic autoimmune conditions that affect healing

If SMILE Pro is not right for you, Pro Vision offers Femto LASIK, PRK, ICL (implantable collamer lenses), and PRESBYOND® as alternatives, all performed by the same expert surgical team using the same Zeiss technology platform.

Your SMILE Pro Journey at Pro Vision

From first contact to final follow-up, here is exactly what your experience looks like at Pro Vision.

1
Stage 1

Initial Consultation & Diagnostic Workup

Your journey begins with a comprehensive diagnostic session — not a sales appointment. Our team uses:

  • CSO Sirius+ Corneal Topographer: 3D mapping of your corneal surface to detect any irregularities and assess candidacy
  • Zeiss IOLMaster 700: precise biometric measurements
  • Full refraction and pupil assessment
  • Tear film and dry eye evaluation

Based on these results, your surgeon reviews the data and discusses your options with full transparency, including whether SMILE Pro is the right procedure for you, or whether an alternative would give better outcomes.

2
Stage 2

Procedure Day

On the day of your SMILE Pro procedure:

  • Arrive at Pro Vision Eye Center. No fasting or pre-operative restrictions required for most patients.
  • Anaesthetic drops are applied. The procedure is painless.
  • You are guided to the operating room. At Pro Vision Eye Center, our smart glass wall allows your family to watch from outside, transparently, while full privacy is maintained when needed.
  • The Zeiss VisuMax 800 performs the laser step: 8 seconds per eye.
  • Your surgeon removes the lenticule through the small incision.
  • You rest briefly in our recovery area. Most patients are ready to leave within 30–60 minutes.
  • Immediately after: your family can see you through the glass wall — the first faces you see when you open your eyes.
3
Stage 3

Follow-Up Care

Pro Vision schedules post-operative appointments at:

  • Day 1 — Vision check. Most patients already see clearly.
  • 1 Week — Confirm healing and visual acuity.
  • 1 Month — Final visual outcome assessment.
  • 3 Months — Long-term stability confirmation.

For international patients, follow-up is available remotely via telemedicine after your return home.

What to Expect During Recovery

SMILE Pro offers one of the fastest recovery profiles of any laser vision correction procedure. Here is a realistic timeline:

First 4–6 Hours

Mild blurring, light sensitivity, and a watery sensation are normal. Rest is recommended. Avoid screens, rubbing your eyes, or exposure to dusty environments.

Day 1 — The Next Morning

Most patients wake up with significantly improved vision, commonly 80–95% of their final visual outcome. You will attend a check-up appointment at Pro Vision before returning to normal activities.

Days 2–7

Vision continues to sharpen. Mild halos around lights at night are normal and usually resolve within weeks. You may return to office work and light daily activities. Avoid swimming and eye make-up.

Weeks 2–4

Vision stabilises further. Nighttime halos reduce. The majority of patients achieve their final visual acuity within this window.

Month 1–3

Complete healing. The small incision is fully sealed. You may resume all activities including contact sports.

Important: Every patient heals at a different rate. Your surgeon will advise you at each follow-up based on your individual healing progress.

Why Choose Pro Vision for Your SMILE Pro Procedure?

One of the First in Egypt

Pro Vision is among the first centres in Egypt to acquire and operate the Zeiss VisuMax 800: the platform that makes SMILE Pro possible. Our surgical team has performed SMILE Pro procedures since its introduction in Egypt, giving them a depth of hands-on experience that newer adopters cannot match.

Zeiss-Exclusive Technology

We operate the complete Zeiss Laser Suite: Zeiss VisuMax 800 (femtosecond laser) and Zeiss MEL 90 (excimer laser) — the same gold-standard platform used in the world's leading refractive surgery centres. We chose Zeiss not because it is the most affordable option, but because it is the best.

Diagnostic-First Approach

At Pro Vision Eye Center, we do not offer you SMILE Pro and then look for a reason to justify it. We run a full diagnostic workup; corneal topography, biometry, tear film, refraction, and then tell you what the data says. If SMILE Pro is right for you, we will tell you. If it is not, we will tell you that too and explain why.

The Pro Vision Environment

Our operating theatre features a smart glass wall that allows your family to watch from outside — providing reassurance and transparency — while switching to full privacy when needed. It is one of several details we designed because we believe the entire patient experience matters, not just the surgery itself.

Frequently Asked Questions About SMILE Pro

The total procedure time for both eyes is approximately 15–20 minutes. The actual laser step — performed by the Zeiss VisuMax 800 — takes 8 seconds per eye. The remaining time is preparation and the lenticule extraction step performed by your surgeon.

No. Anaesthetic eye drops are applied before the procedure, making it completely painless. Some patients describe a sensation of mild pressure during the laser step, but no pain. After the procedure, you may notice a mild grittiness or light sensitivity for a few hours — this is normal and settles quickly.

Most patients experience significantly improved vision within 24 hours of the procedure. Approximately 90% of patients achieve their final visual outcome within the first 1–4 weeks. Your surgeon will assess your recovery at each follow-up appointment.

The main difference is that LASIK requires the creation of a corneal flap, while SMILE Pro is flapless. SMILE Pro uses a single femtosecond laser step to create and extract a lenticule through a small self-sealing incision. This results in a smaller incision, higher corneal biomechanical stability, significantly lower dry eye risk, and no permanent flap — which means no risk from trauma years after surgery.

SMILE Pro can correct myopia up to -10.00 diopters and astigmatism up to -5.00 diopters. If your prescription falls outside this range, or if your corneal profile is not suitable, Pro Vision will recommend the most appropriate alternative — such as ICL (implantable collamer lens) for very high prescriptions.

Yes. One of SMILE Pro's major advantages for active patients is faster return to physical activity. Most patients can resume non-contact exercise within 3–5 days and contact sports within approximately 1 week. Because there is no corneal flap, the risk of sports-related complications that exist with LASIK simply does not apply.

SMILE Pro carries a significantly lower risk of dry eye compared to LASIK. This is because the flapless approach avoids cutting the corneal nerves that are responsible for triggering tear production. Some patients experience mild temporary dryness in the first few weeks — managed with lubricating drops — which resolves as the cornea heals. Your tear film is assessed before surgery to ensure suitability.

SMILE Pro achieves stable, long-term results for the vast majority of patients. In rare cases where a small residual prescription remains, a minor enhancement procedure may be considered. Your surgeon will discuss this in detail during your consultation. Regular follow-up appointments at Pro Vision allow us to monitor your vision long-term.
